Columbia prof to discuss RASL Procedure during Davis Lecture

Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser, Robert E. Carroll Professor of the Hand, chief of hand microvascular and trauma surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and professor of surgery at Columbia University Medical Center, will give the J. T. Davis Hand Lecture Series presentation, “Chronic Scapholunate Instability Injury: The RASL Procedure, 25 Year Perspective,” from 6:45-8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, in room N 318 (3A).

UM faculty member to promote 'Radical Togetherness'

Dr. Patrick Elliot Alexander, associate professor of English and African-American studies at the University of Mississippi, will present the Office of Diversity and Inclusion's "inclUsive conversation," "Toward a Radical Togetherness: African-American Literature, Abolition Pedagogy and the Prison-to-College Pipeline Program," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, in second-floor conference rooms C and D in the student union.

Texas M.D. to discuss Chagas Disease screening, pregnancy

Dr. Morven Edwards, infectious disease faculty at the Texas Children's Clinical Care Center, Houston, will give the UMMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds presentation, “Screening for Chagas Disease in Pregnant Women,” at 7 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Guyton Symposium to include presentations, book signing

​Three presentations and a book signing are among the activities slated as part of the Billy S. Guyton History of Medicine Symposium scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6.

After a UMMC welcome and update from 10:45-11 a.m., Dr. Amy Wiese Forbes will present "The Murder of Col. Crane and the Determination of Insanity" from 11-11:30 a.m. in room SOM 111; Dr. Ralph Didlake will present "Centenary College of Brandon Springs - Mississippi's First School of Medicine," from 11:30 a.m.- noon in room SOM 111; Dr. Lucius M. Lampton will present the 17th annual Guyton Lecture, "Images of Mississippi Medicine: A Photographic History of Medicine in Mississippi," from noon-1 p.m. in room SOM 124; and a book signing by Lampton will take place from 1-2 p.m. in room U115-03 in the Rowland Medical Library Collaborative Center.

Tokyo professor to address aldosterone, salt-sensitive HTN

Dr. Toshiro Fujita, professor, fellow and chief of the Division of Clinical Epigenetics, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo, will give the UMMC Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Seminar Series presentation, "Aldosterone and Salt-sensitive Hypertension," at noon on Monday, Sept. 9, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Johns Hopkins prof to talk adult cortical plasticity recovery

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, UMMC vice chancellor for health affairs, is scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting set for noon on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Woodward will provide an update for the Medical Center and faculty with 20 years of service will be recognized. Flu shots will be available before and after the meeting from Student and Employee Health. Lunch will be available on a first-come basis.

Collegiate scholars set to heat up RICE competition

Selected graduate students from diverse backgrounds in a range of academic disciplines will participate in the annual Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl, an interactive competition to provide the best solution for a realistic scenario about complex rural health issues from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in lecture hall 124 in the medical education building.

Sponsored by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, the event will include participants from Jackson State University, Mississippi College, Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi and UMMC. A reception will follow the competition.
